Project Proposal
For my Internship, I am reaching out to the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) in Washington D.C with the chief of natural resources, Ira Newbreast. Through this opportunity, I will have the ability to support the wildlife and parks program at a tribal level. The Fish, Wildlife and Recreation program is organized with the following five rudiments: Wildlife and Parks Program, Fish Hatchery Operations & Maintenance Programs, Endangered Species Program, Tribal Management program, Rights Protection Program. With this said, the BIA’s delegation is to set forth to restore Bureau and tribal natural resources that has been damaged by oil spills and hazardous substance releases into the environment. How the BIA helps by providing treaties such as: Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA), the Clean Water Act (CWA) and the Oil Pollution Act (OPA) and much more.
My mentor, Ira Newbreast, is responsible for all trust assets and rights pertaining to federally recognize Native American tribes and individual Indians in the United States. Ira Newbreast is the Division Chief of Natural Resources. This means that he oversees the agriculture and natural resources that are affected by the Indian tribes throughout the United States. Ira is my grandfather, who is a Native American role model especially to me because he is from the same tribe as me which is Blackfeet Tribe. Not only can I comfortably communicate with him, it will improve my leadership skills for the rest of my academic years. What I can offer my mentor is my young perspective which can be helpful in some ways because I am aware of the lack of culture in my school even though we reside close to deprived Indian communities.
My internship will allow me to pursue my academic goals when I attend Fort Lewis Collage, and take Business Administration for my major. I will add effort in everything because this is an opportunity that most students do not have. When I return, I know I will have a different perspective than before which can be a benefit with diverse topics. Knowing that, this will help improve my career future because not only am I Native American women, I can officially say that I have experienced being an intern with one of the associates of the BIA.
I am still currently researching my topic for my project with the BIA. Aside from not knowing, I have come up with some ideas that I might be interested in proposing for this internship. Since my mentor is a part of natural resources, I feel that it would be important to understand the development for the rights protection of the Native Americans. The preparation that was done for my research was simply exploring Indian issues that are current. Another project that I was thinking of doing was combining of an Agency perspective because so many of these topics are overlapping resources and assets.
During my alleyway towards my internship I first had to relinquish my first hope of my career life which was a Marine Biologist. When realizing that numerous people were befalling into this dream I obtained advice from a trainer of SeaWorld, after I understood that when perusing this profession it would become a challenge in the future with income and finding an actual job to pursue this occupation. Even though that this was my dream for my career future, I am thankful for the realization from many chats with my grandfather, because I recognize that helping my people can be more important.
