¡Voy a sobrevivir! / I will survive!.
For this Semester's Spanish, we went manly focused on traveling, and how we would survive in those foreign countries. The main project that we did was that I created a travel guide for a country that we chose. My country was Spain, after researching all the aspects that would happen if we traveled as in: Food, Accommodations, lodging, transportation and our choice situation (beach). Then I was assigned a country contact who actually traveled to my country that and experienced, I asked for advice and what they did different then other countries. The final aspect that we did for this project, was create life skits in real life that would happen. We were assigned a partner to memorize and present our skits at our all school exhibition.

Did you know?
In Spain, the bars serve a small plate of food to accompany a drink. This small dish is called una tapa. The word “tapa” means ‘a lid’. Originally, workers would go to the tavern after a hard day’s work. Their glasses of wine or beer would be covered with a slice of bread (just like a lid) to keep the flies away from the drink underneath. Nowadays, una tapa is a plate of food (an appetizer of sorts) served with your drink; it’s no longer a lid! Comes with coffee…80% is called a tortilla, egg omelet: potatoes, onion and additional.

Hermanos, hermanas
La esperanza por inmigración
Se plantó en sus corazones
Americanos necesitan Alcino
¿Por qué impedirlo?
Él recoge tu lechuga, tus tomates, y tus cebollas

Project: Drawing
For my project, I did a drawing of where a man is standing on the border of Mexico and U.S. On the Mexico side, he is standing with tradition, family, and poverty. On the U.S side he is standing with racism, discrimination, low salary and remittance.
He won’t give up

Good day to tell a story about a man
A man who stands lives under two flags
One American flag and Mexican flag
He’s portrayed through the message
Of being the bad guy with the title of malinchista
He is name is Alcino
A regular man who only speaks with a different tongue
A regular man with a family
He traveled to civilization of the Americans
To retain his social security and medical benefits
It all started in 1980
Where families took sacrifices for the future
They left for the journey just like Alcino
Brothers, sisters
The hope for immigration
Is planted in their hearts
Americans need Alcino,
Why stop him?
He’s the one who pick your lettuce, tomatoes, and onions
He’s the one who won’t give up
He’s the one who won’t give up
He works just like the other 38 million immigrants
People become Stereotypes
Yet he still won’t give up
His daughter cries because of her father’s absent
And he cries for his daughter precious love
You see you need people like Alcino
He´s the one who won´t give up
It’s not because of different culture or norms
But because his country is in poverty and searching for better opportunities
This is Alicno’s dream
A dream for hope, where he can return to his family in Mexico
A dream where people won’t call him malichista
A dream for immigration
You see, people like alcino
Want to be accepted into this country
Where they can proudly stand under
Those two flags of American and Mexican

Project Reflection
What we did for this project in Spanish 2 is that we learned about the important events in Mexican-American history, took ladders the led us to develop our ability to use the past tenses in Spanish and gain new perspectives through writing our own corrido and project pieces. A couple of historical events that we studied were the Mexican and American war and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. This is where America annexes Texas and soon after America declared war with Mexico. The Treaty happened in 1835, and ended the war. A corrido is a song that provides information about a historical event that teaches the audience. The corrido that I decided to study is Mis Dos Patrias por Los Tigres Del Norte. The reason why I chose to study this corrido is because it’s about immigration and how it affects Mexicans, in many ways. This topic has been discovered many times, but writing my own song about this provided a new perspective not only to me but to the white community because it tells a story about a man who stands under two flags (American & Mexican).
For my project, I drew a picture with a man who is standing on the border of Mexico and America. On the Mexico side he is standing with family, religion, and church. On the American side, he is standing with discrimination, racism, low salary and remittance. The process that I made while making my project was taking my time while using the charcoal utensils because you have to have the precise shading to make it realistic. The reason why I chose to do this is because with my song, I talked about a man who stands underneath two flags that changes him completely and I related this to my drawing.
Three things that I learned about grammar from this project is the difference between preterit and imperfect. Preterit is a concrete firm feeling, it has a snap sound; for example I was walking is past progressive and I just walked is preterit tense. This tense can be used in events of sequence events that happened many time and beginning & ending. Three things that I learned from the Mexican-American war is that this event happened between 1846-1848; this is where the United States annexes Texas and declares war with Mexico because of this annexation. President James K. Polk forced Mexico to go to war with California and southwest. This changed many Hispanic lives because of this war, it led into many issues that concerned with poverty and immigration. One challenging part of this project was deciding what my project was to relate to my corrido. I came over this challenge by drawing many different ideas, and finally coming up with my own. This really helps me because I literally throw all of my ideas on paper and look at it from different perspective then when it was in my head and I can sort through my ideas.
